Chrome OS. I’m Not So Sure I Care?

Ok.  I’ve seen a bunch today on the Google’s Chrome OS.  Here’s one example.

1st off… Google can…  Oh yeah.  Have to keep this PG-13.  Um… Google could slide off the face of the Earth and I wouldn’t care.  Don’t put out fancy dancey techno products and then complain about the system of commerce and government that allows people the ready cash to buy them.

Google won’t see one thin DIME of my $$ for anything.  I use T-mobile.  I like T-mobile.  I even like the Android OS.  But I WILL NOT buy a phone sponsored by Google.  So unless T-Mobile gets a 3G Blackberry, I’m not giving up my sad phone.  If it does finally break; an i-Phone may be in my future and the comely, weirdly accented, Catherine Zeta-Jones will have to excuse me while I move to AT&T.

As to the Chrome OS.  I will say the same thing I said about Larry Ellison’s plans to rope everything into one big cloud (that he would control).  People really don’t like Digital Socialism for important apps just like they don’t like the economic version for important things like health care.

It’s just fine for social networking and non mission critical apps.  But when I need to have a budget proposal in by 10AM and “the cloud” decides to consult Murphy’s schedule and not mine, I have a problem.  Business needs the ability to have locally based apps.  Period.  Even local intranets can’t replace having an office suite right here on my desktop.  And that’s just the everyday apps.  Show of hands: Who wants to run a CAD program on a T1 shared by 40 people trying to Youtube?

Oh… but it’s meant for Laptops.  People with laptops WANT the speed of getting on the Internet fast.  And with broadband everywhere now… they won’t need local apps.

How do I put this nicely?  Bullcrap.  That sounds like a nice idea, but in the reality of most people’s lives, Broadband IS NOT everywhere and when it isn’t… being able to hit START > %officesuite% > %neededapp% is a feature that 90% of business won’t give up.  So while you may make a dent in the causal users; the Bread and Butter of an OS, business, won’t be beating down your door.

Second bit of bullcrap.  People don’t like owning multiple OS platforms.  Only power users put up with knowing Unix and Mac and Windows (some of us even still speak DOS).  I put up with it because I have to.  It’s my job.  I hate it.  It’s just as annoying as fighting code when you have 3 or 4 different languages in your head.  “What syntax error!  That’s just fine.  Oh… yeah… SQL need single quotes for a literal!”

The average Joe(sephine) wants the same look on his/her boat anchor desktop as well as their flyweight notebook.  (S)He wants the same apps.  Same capabilities.  And when that person is a business user; double that desire.    There will be some that don’t care, but the majority will pass because they just can’t get app X for it.

So unless you can Appleize users from the ground up with phones and MP3 players, you aren’t going to do a lot of damage.  Oh… and how did Apple get people to buy Macs?  By having LOCAL APPS that enhanced the i-Phone and i-Pod experience.

Now… we consumers may be forced to cloud computing eventually.  But that doesn’t mean I have to like it.  It also doesn’t mean I have to participate.  There’ll always be plenty of free OS’s out there and plenty of free Open Source Apps for those of us who don’t like Big Brother whether he has a .com or .gov address.

The only thing I don’t have to complain about is some GI taking up space in my living room. I’ll let you know about the Civil Courts if someone ever owes more than $20 to me. ---If you didn’t get that one; sue your Civics or US History Teacher.

dantes firing range -A T-
Remove the spaces and convert the -AT- to... you know the drill. In VB Script that's: Value = replace (replace ("dantes firing range -A T-", " ",""), "-AT-", chr(64))
